5 Mistakes That Kill Your Conversion Rate (and How to Fix Them)

You've invested in a beautiful website, maybe even in Google or social media advertising, and you're getting traffic. But the contact forms stay stubbornly quiet and the phone doesn't ring. This scenario is more common than you'd think, and it's almost always explained by a combination of these five mistakes.

Mistake #1: A load time that's too slow

This is mistake number one, and it's often invisible to the site owner (who visits their own site from a fast computer with a good connection). In reality, 53% of mobile visitors leave a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load.

How to check: go to Google's PageSpeed Insights and enter your site's URL. A score below 50 on mobile means a large share of your visitors leave before even seeing your content.

How to fix it: compress your images (WebP format, 75-85% quality), remove unnecessary plugins and scripts, enable caching, and choose high-performance hosting. These actions alone can double or triple your speed.

Mistake #2: Missing or invisible calls to action

Your visitor is interested in your services. But they have to hunt for 30 seconds to find where to click to contact you. Result: they leave.

Every page on your site needs a clear goal and a visible call-to-action (CTA) button without scrolling: "Request a free quote," "Book a call," "Contact us." This button should be in a color that contrasts with the rest of the page.

How to fix it: check that every main page has a CTA visible "above the fold" (without scrolling). Repeat that CTA at the bottom of the page. On mobile, test that the button is large enough to tap easily with a finger.

Mistake #3: A contact form that's too long or too complicated

Every extra field in your form reduces your completion rate. A form asking for first name, last name, email, phone, address, project type, budget, and timeline has a good chance of being abandoned halfway through.

The golden rule: ask for the minimum needed to follow up with the prospect and roughly understand their need. Name, email (or phone), message: that's often enough.

How to fix it: cut your form down to 3 or 4 fields maximum. If you need more information, collect it during the first phone call.

Mistake #4: No visible social proof

Your visitor doesn't know you. They found your site among other Google results. The question on their mind when they arrive is: "Can I trust this business?"

Social proof answers that question: customer reviews with ratings, named testimonials with photos, references from known clients, certifications, years in business or number of projects completed.

How to fix it: feature at least 3 customer testimonials with first name, last name, company, and a photo if possible on your homepage. Display your Google rating (if it's good) with a widget or a screenshot. Mention concrete numbers: "90 clients served," "98% satisfaction."

Mistake #5: A site that's not optimized for mobile

You test your site from your desktop computer and everything looks perfect. But 60-70% of your visitors arrive from a smartphone. If your site loads poorly on mobile, if the text is too small, if the buttons are too close together, or if the form is hard to fill out on a phone, you're losing most of your prospects.

How to fix it: test your site in real conditions on an iPhone and an Android device. Ask someone else to navigate it without you looking over their shoulder. Identify the friction points and fix them. If navigation is difficult, a responsive redesign is needed.

The full diagnosis

These five mistakes can stack up and multiply. A slow site with a form that's too long, no social proof, and hard to navigate on mobile can have a conversion rate below 0.1% — meaning fewer than one in a thousand visitors contacts you.

A site well optimized across these five dimensions can easily reach a 2-5% conversion rate — a 20-50x increase in contact requests without raising your ad budget.
